The temperature drops and our skin feels itchy and dry. Humans suffer, but the same happens to our pets.
Caring for your pet’s skin in winter
01/11/2018
When the weather turns cold and wintery outside and the heating is turned up inside our homes, the changes in temperature hurts.
We can shout out if our skin is feeling dry and itchy. We can moisturize, keep our skin soft and supple and take care of ourselves. Our pets can’t. They need us to watch out for the signs that they are in discomfort and take care of them.
There are some easy ways to look after our furry friends.
Bathing & grooming
A kind way of grooming your pets, and bonding with them at the same time, is to use a soft brush to brush their coat. This will help to stimulate their hair follicles and the natural oils in their glands. Any dry and dead skin cells will be removed at the same time. This stops a build-up of dandruff and help your pet’s skin to repair itself.
It might seem a good idea to give your dog a soapy bath. However, if your dog has sensitive skin, using shampoo can potentially remove essential natural oils and make their dry skin worse. When in doubt, speak to your vet and give your dog plain water baths in the meantime. If you need to clean your dog, maybe when they have had fun in lots of mud, use a medicated shampoo designed for sensitive skin. You can also massage them with coconut oil. High in lauric acid, this helps with reducing the production of inflammatory yeast.
Enrich their diet all year round
Omega-3 supplements are a great solution for itchy, flaky skin. By adding them to their daily diet you can build up your pet’s hydration, as well as reducing acidic inflammation. If you give them supplements throughout the year, it will help in the cold winter months. At Tango Champ we have researched the best natural, high quality Omega 3 Fish Oil to help combat your best friends’ skin problems. We have even designed an easy to use pump to ensure your pets get the exact amount they need in every feed. Nutritional balance is essential.
Keep the air flowing
The changes in temperature are harsh. So are the use of deodorizers and cleaning products in the home. They can cause lots of irritations to pets and humans. The best way of dealing with this is to make sure the air is circulating. It stops allergens collecting in the carpets.
Air humidifiers are a great help too, especially if your dog tends to be sensitive under normal circumstances. Your vet can help to diagnose and treat indoor allergies and provide relief in the form of medications, supplements, or special shampoos.
Other causes of skin problems
In addition to winter changes, there are also the usual culprits — dust mites, molds, etc. — which are not being aired out and which may lead to an increase in reactive skin or breathing symptoms, especially if your dog tends to be sensitive under normal circumstances. Your veterinarian can help to diagnose and treat indoor allergies and provide relief in the form of medications, supplements, or special shampoos.
It’s important to ask your vet if there is a persistent problem, but kind, gentle treatments are a good way to start.
